Finding the Right Dallas County Office
The correct department depends on the type of service or record involved. The County Clerk generally handles county court records, birth and death certificates for records maintained by Dallas County, marriage licenses and records, assumed names, and other official public records, while the District Clerk maintains filings and records for district courts. Birth and death records from within the City of Dallas are handled by the City of Dallas, which serves as its own local registrar, rather than the Dallas County Clerk. Property tax questions belong with the Tax Office. Property appraisal values, ownership accounts, exemptions, and appraisal protests are generally handled by the appropriate appraisal district rather than the Dallas County Tax Office. County budgeting, auditing, purchasing, and treasury matters are handled by separate financial departments. District Courts Administration provides administrative information about district court operations, while individual Justice of the Peace courts handle matters assigned to their specific precinct and place.
Public safety requests are also divided among several offices.
